PHILIP JACKSON
Artist Sculpture Scottish
Philip Jackson is a contemporary Scottish artist known for his bronze sculptures depicting life-sized elongated figures. “My sculptures are essentially an impressionistic rendering of the figure. Where you see the figure seemingly grow out of the ground, the texture resembles tree bark, rock, or lava flow,” he’s said of his work. “As the eye moves up the sculpture, the finish becomes gentler and more delicately worked, culminating in the hands and the mask, both of which are precisely observed and modeled.” Born on April 18, 1944 in Inverness, United Kingdom, he studied at the Farnham School of Art. His larger than life figural works, can found in public squares in cities across the United Kingdom. In 2009, he was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order by Queen Elizabeth II. The artist currently lives and works in West Sussex, United Kingdom.
Biography
Philip Jackson (Scottish, b.1944) is a renowned sculptor known for his Modern style and strong emphasis on form. After graduating from the Farnham School of Art, Jackson spent a year working as a press photographer. He then joined a design firm as a sculptor. Jackson divides his time equally between creating gallery sculptures and doing commissioned pieces for the public''s enjoyment. Many of his best pieces compliment outdoor areas, such as Young Mozart in Chelsea, the 1966 World Cup Sculpture in Newham, London, and Bobby Moore located outside Wembley Stadium. Numerous artists inspire Jackson''s work, including Sir Jacob Epstein (American/British, 1880–1959), Henry Moore (English, 1898–1986), Auguste Rodin (French, 1840–1917), Kenneth Armitage (British, 1916–2002), and Oscar Nemon (Croatian, 1906–1985).
In 1987, Jackson was elected to the Fellow Royal Society of British Sculptors, and, a few years later, the society awarded him the Silver Medal for Sculptors. In 1991 and 1992, he was awarded the Otto Beit Medal for Sculpture. During the 1990s, he also had various solo exhibitions at the Stansted Park Foundation, Chichester Festivities, Cassanova Gardens in Venice, Pashley Manor in East Sussex, Parkview Gallery in Bristol, and Naples, FL. In the late 1990s, Jackson''s Wallenberg Monument was unveiled in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Between 2000 and 2001, Jackson created the St. George for Linch War Memorial, and had one-man exhibitions at Chichester Cathedral and Rymans in Chichester. Jackson''s sculpture King George IV, which was commissioned by the Britannia Royal Naval College, was unveiled in April 2002. That same year, Jackson''s Equestrian Sculpture of Her Majesty the Queen was designed to celebrate the Jubilee for Windsor Great Park. The sculpture was unveiled by the Queen.
From 2004 to 2009, Jackson had various solo exhibitions at several locations, such as the Portland Gallery in London, UK, the Catto Gallery in London, West Dean College and Gardens, and Saville Gardens in Windsor Great Park. In 2008, Jackson created a large sculptural head of Sir Alf Ramsey for Wembley Stadium''s Football Association. At present, Jackson lives and works at the Edward Lawrence Studio in Midhurst, West Sussex.
